Tournament Information

The Archery World Cup Series features the best international archers competing at four qualifying stages earning valuable World Cup points in hopes of becoming one of the 36 athletes that will compete in the World Cup finals in Edinburgh, Scotland, Sept. 18-19.

The beehive state will host the third stage for the 2010 World Cup in Ogden scheduled for Aug. 3-7. The other qualifying events for the 2010 World Cup are: Porec, Croatia; Anatayla, Turkey; and Shanghai, China.

The first part of the Ogden World Cup will be held at Weber State University, with the finals being shot at picturesque Lindquist Field in downtown Ogden. This same event will also be held in Ogden in 2011 and 2012.

The Archery World Cup, which started in 2006, has been a popular event for athletes, sponsors, media and fans. FITA, the International Archery Federation, sanctions the event and permits organizers to select unique competition venues, which included hosting the finals by shooting over a canal at the 2009 Archery World Cup in Denmark, and competing from a floating platform at the 2007 final in Dubai. The Archery World Cup has grown into one of the annual premiere events for the FITA that attracts approximately 300 athletes from 30 countries at each of the various qualifying stages.

To better understand competitive archery, there are two types of bows used – recurve and compound (See Equipment). The athletes will compete in a total of 10 events during the 2010 World Cup.

  • Individual Recurve Men
  • Individual Compound Men
  • Team Recurve Men
  • Team Compound Men
  • Individual Recurve Women
  • Individual Compound Women
  • Team Recurve Women
  • Team Compound Women
  • Mixed Team Recurve (1 male and 1 female from the same country)
  • Mixed Team Compound (1 male and 1 female from the same country)

During the Ogden World Cup,archers will shoot in two rounds of competition. The first round is the Qualification Round where a total of 72 arrows are shot at 70 meters (approx. 77 yards) for recurve, and 50 meters (approx. 55 yards) for compound to determine the athletes’ seeding. The archers are seeded based upon their accumulated points. (Seeding: No. 1 – most points; No. 2 – 2nd most points; etc.) Points are earned for each arrow, with a bulls-eye counting 10 points. A perfect score is 720. (See Targets)

The top 64 individuals and the top 16 teams from the Qualification Round advance to the Elimination Round. The Elimination Round features the top archers in a match-play tournament format in each of the 10 events. The seeded archers (1 vs. 64, 2 vs. 63, etc) will shoot against each other with the match winners moving onto the next round, until a champion is determined, identical to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships. (See Elimination Round)

All individual and team archers earn World Cup standings points that will be combined with their other World Cup Stage finishes for final rankings. The top seven individuals in the Recurve Men, Recurve Women, Compound Men and Compound Women will punch their ticket for Scotland. The top mixed teams from each will earn a chance to compete in Scotland in the World Cup final. The archer’s and team’s top finishes in the best three of the four World Cup stages will be used to determine their final standing and eligibility to compete in the World Cup Finals.

Elimination Round – Finals Venue is Lindquist Field

Individual: The Elimination Round consists of a match-play tournament in which the 64 competitors, seeded from the ranking round, compete head-to-head (1 vs. 64, 2 vs. 63, etc), with winners of each match moving on to the next round.

The archers that win the round of 32 will shoot subsequently into the round of 16. The field is reduced to eight quarterfinalists. Quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals. Then, the two semifinal losers shoot against each other to determine the bronze-medalist; the semifinal winners will shoot for the gold medal.

In Individual match-play rounds, competitors shoot sets (or ends) of six arrows from the round of 64 to the quarterfinals. Once the archers reach the quarterfinals, they will shoot sets of three arrows. In the finals matches the archers alternate shooting one arrow at a time with a 30-second time limit between arrows. The target is set to the distance of 70 meters for recurve and 50 meters for compound divisions.

All matches leading into the quarterfinals consist of a maximum of 3 sets of 6 arrows per set. The winner of each set, the archer who gets the highest score in the six arrows gets 2 set points. If the set is tied each archer gets 1 set point. The winner of the match is determined by the number of set points won, not the value of the arrows. The match winner is the first to reach 4 set points. The match will finish once the four set points is reached within the three sets. If the match is still tied after 3 sets, then a one arrow shoot-off will determine the match winner, and the archer who shoots the arrow closest to the bulls-eye advances.

For quarterfinals through finals, the match changes to a maximum 5 sets of three arrows per set. The match winner this time is the first to achieve 6 points, and again, if the match is tied, a one-arrow shoot-off will be used to break the tie. In the tie-break, the archer who’s arrow is closest to the center will advance.

Team: The team Elimination Round begins with 16 teams on the line, shooting in eight head-to-head matches. The second round or quarterfinals will consist of the eight winning teams shooting at the same time in four matches. In the semifinal round, the four winning teams will meet. The losers of the semifinals will shoot for the bronze, while the winners will shoot for the gold medal.

Teams consist of three archers. Each team shoots a total of four ends, with each team member shooting two arrows each per end. Each team will have two minutes to complete each end. The total of all 24 arrows will be added to determine a total score. After every end, the trailing team will shoot first during the next end. Maximum number of points per match is 240.

The Mixed Team competition (2 per team) is the same as above, however there are only two archers competing – one woman and one man per country. They shoot a total of four ends, with each team member shooting two arrows per end for a total of 16 arrows. Maximum number of points per match is 160.

Tiebreaker system: If tied, each archer from each team will shoot one arrow. The total for that end (3 arrows for team and 2 arrows for mixed team) will be calculated and the winner is the team with the highest point score. In the event of another tie, a second end will be shot. In the event of a third tie, the team with the closest arrow to the bullseye will win the match.
